China’s Exports and Imports Fall

Chinese exports and imports fell unexpectedly last month — more evidence the global financial crisis is slowing the world’s fourth-largest economy. China’s customs agency today (Wednesday) said exports dropped in November for the first time in seven years, falling more than two percent (two-point-two percent) when compared to the same month last year.

The country’s imports of foreign goods dropped even more steeply, almost 18 percent (17-point-nine). The sharper decline in imports appeared to have a strong effect on China’s trade surplus, which soared in November to an all-time high of 40-point-one billion dollars.

Experts say imports and exports will continue to decline in the coming months. The declines are especially painful for China, where exports have been rising – until recently – at annual rates above 20 percent. Beijing is now trying to boost domestic spending in hopes of insulating China from the global slowdown
