A fire has destroyed one of South Korea’s most historic landmarks which the government had declared the country’s premier national treasure. The 600-year old wooden building called the Namdaemun gate burned to the ground Sunday.
Police suspect arson. A taxi driver told authorities he saw a man believed to be in his 50s climb to the building just before it went up in flames.
The Namdaemun was the oldest wooden structure in Seoul. It was built in 1398 and sat on top the remnants of a stone gate that once surrounded the city. Many Koreans told local newspapers they are shocked and devastated that the landmark has been destroyed.
