U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is urging China to work with the United States on energy issues as the two countries face increased demand at home and record high oil prices. Speaking today (Tuesday) at the opening of two days of high-level trade talks with Chinese officials, Paulson said that as the world’s two largest importers of oil, China and the United States have a shared interest in avoiding supply disruptions.
Paulson says the two countries should also work to help make alternative energy sources more available, and promote energy security and environmental sustainability.
The talks, which end on Wednesday, are being held in (the city of) Annapolis, Maryland, not far from Washington and will be co-chaired by Paulson and China’s vice premier, Wang Qishan.
