Los Angeles, (in the U.S. western state of) California may soon ban new fast food restaurants in one of its poor neighborhoods, as a way to combat obesity. Members of the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously for a year-long moratorium on Tuesday. It must still be approved by the mayor. The ban covers an 82-square-kilometer area of the city’s south, home to about half-a-million residents.

Supporters of the measure say it will give the area time to attract restaurants that serve healthier food. Researchers have found obesity rates are higher in South LA than in the rest of the city. Fast-food chains oppose the ban, saying they are being unfairly targeted. A spokesman for the California Restaurant Association (Andrew Casana) said the group will consider a legal challenge to the ordinance.
