International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge says he believes history will view the Beijing Olympics as a “milestone in China’s remarkable transformation.”
Speaking today (Monday) in Beijing at a pre-Olympic ceremony, Rogge says he is confident the games will leave a great legacy for China.
Rogge says China’s role as Olympic host has opened a window to the world’s most populous nation. He says he hopes the Olympics will help China heal after its devastating losses from the deadly, massive earthquake in Sichuan.
Rogge also says the construction of new airport terminals, highways and parks for the Games, will improve the quality of life and contribute to China’s development for years to come. Despite Rogge’s praises, the Games are expected to bring challenges on many fronts in the weeks ahead.
