China has vowed to stop milk tainted with the harmful chemical melamine from reaching export markets. Agriculture minister Sun Zhengcai said today (Tuesday) that authorities must crack down on the milk producers thought to be responsible for the contamination. He said the melamine may have been added at so-called “milk stations,” which collect fresh milk from local farmers and sell it.
He said staff at the milk stations may have added melamine to poor-quality or diluted milk to raise its protein content to an acceptable level.
A foreign ministry spokeswoman, Jiang Yu, said China is staying in touch on the matter with the World Health Organization and food safety agencies in other countries.
