World stock market indexes fell sharply today (Monday), with investors fearful that a U.S. government plan to bail out troubled financial companies will not be enough to stabilize the system.

In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average sank more than four percent (456 points), falling below 10-thousand for the first time in four years. The S & P 500 and the NASDAQ each dropped more than five percent (55 points and 106 points).

European stock markets closed sharply lower. London’s Financial Times 100 index hit a four year low, falling almost seven-point-nine percent (321 points) to end at four-thousand-589. The CAC-40 in Paris lost nine percent (369 points) to close at three-thousand-712, and the DAX in Frankfurt fell seven percent (410 points) to finish at five-thousand-387.

In Asia, Tokyo’s Nikkei index fell four-and-a-quarter percent (465 points) to end the day at 10-thousand-473. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index plunged five percent (879 points), to close at 16-thousand-804.
