Wildlife investigators say the trade of wild cat parts is growing in Burma. In a newly released survey of the trade, the World Wildlife Fund and wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC say they have observed observed skin, bone, teeth, and claws at markets in Burma from almost 12-hundred wild cats.
In a statement today (Wednesday), the fund says the parts were from at least 107 tigers and eight species of wild cats found in Burma. Of those species from Burma, one is classified as endangered and four others as vulnerable. Chris Shepherd, a regional co-ordinator for TRAFFIC, says that while parts from almost 12-hundred cats were observed, he believes that is only a portion of the animals traded.
Shepherd says the way animal parts are displayed and sold at markets along Burma’s borders with Thailand and China suggests a serious lack of law enforcement.
