Chinese state media are reporting that a harmful chemical that has been found in the country’s food supply is frequently added to animal feed. The reports published Thursday suggest that the melamine contamination — already detected in eggs and milk products — could be more widespread.
Other reports indicate officials were aware of the problem about one month before it became public. The “Beijing News” newspaper reported Thursday that egg producer Hanwei Group discovered melamine in animal feed from a supplier in late September.
