A U.S. newspaper says scientists believe Iran has stockpiled enough uranium to make one nuclear weapon, if the material is further enriched. Scientists interviewed by “The New York Times” say before Iran can make a weapon, it still has to purify the nuclear fuel and put it into a warhead design. They add it is unclear whether Iran actually knows how to design a bomb.
The experts based their assessment on a new report by the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency this week. The report says that as of early this month, Iran had made 630 kilograms of low-enriched uranium – enough for a nuclear bomb.
One of the scientists says the stockpile underscores that Iran is “marching down the path to developing the nuclear weapons option.”
