Chinese state media report that 11 girls have died of carbon monoxide poisoning after building a fire to stay warm in their school in northern China. The official Xinhua news agency said (today/ Tuesday) that the students died Monday after lighting the fire at a secondary school in Dingbian county in Shaanxi province.

The report did not give the age of the girls. It also did not not say whether the incident occurred in a dormitory or classroom.

Carbon monoxide poisoning in the winter months is common in rural areas of northern China. Local residents sometimes burn coal to keep warm when temperatures drop.
