The top executives at the so-called “Big Three” U.S. automakers are driving to Washington in hybrid cars for hearings later this week that could determine the fate of their ailing companies. The chiefs of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler were criticized by lawmakers for flying to hearings earlier this month in private jets.
The executives are expected to present Congress with detailed plans on how they would use billions of dollars in emergency aid. Some lawmakers have been reluctant to approve the aid, but on Tuesday, G.M. and Chrysler warned they might not survive past January without government intervention.
Meanwhile, leaders of the main autoworkers’ union are holding an emergency meeting today in Detroit. Union officials say they will look at making new concessions in their contracts to help keep the car companies in business.
