Three Chinese naval ships are on their way to the Gulf of Aden to join an international fleet fighting piracy in the waters off Somalia. Two destroyers and a supply ship departed today (Friday) from their home port on the island of Hainan. The vessels are carrying at least 800 sailors, including dozens of special forces personnel. They are charged with patrolling the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean to protect cargo ships from pirate attacks.

A Kenyan shipping director today implored China and other countries to use their warships to protect all the vessels in the area — instead of protecting only ships from their own countries. Somali pirates have hijacked more than 40 ships in 2008 and are holding at least 15 vessels and their crews hostage.
