China and Vietnam say they have settled a long-standing dispute over their shared land border, just hours before a crucial deadline. Late Wednesday, officials from both countries announced the completion of work demarking their 14-hundred kilometer land border. In a joint statement, they hailed the agreement as an event of great historical significance for relations between the two countries.
Nine years ago, Vietnam and China began making efforts to resolve the dispute and agreed to complete the work of laying border stones by the end of 2008. Although China and Vietnam are communist allies, they have a history of animosity. In 1979, they fought a bloody, but short border war. February marks the 30th anniversary of that conflict that claimed thousands of lives.
