China has released newly revised economic growth figures for 2007, which show it moving ahead of Germany to become the world’s third-largest economy. Released Wednesday by China’s National Bureau of Statistics, the figures show the Chinese economy expanded by 13 percent in 2007, more than one percent more than the government’s previous estimates.
This increase raised China’s gross domestic product to three-point-five trillion, putting it ahead of Germany’s 2007 GDP of three-point-three trillion.
China is now behind the United States whose economy was worth 13-point-eight trillion in 2007 and Japan at four-point-four trillion.
The upbeat news comes as China’s economy, like others across the globe, is being beaten down by the global financial crisis. Although China’s revised economic growth rate for 2007 was its highest in more than a decade, economic growth this year is forecast to drop to seven-point-five percent, a rate not seen since 1990.
China is expected to release its 2008 economic growth figures next week.
