The U.S. Treasury Department says Bank of America will receive another 20-billion dollars in fresh capital and guarantees against up to 100 billion dollars in troubled assets.
The agreement was announced early today (Friday) after long negotiations. The deal will allow Bank of America to use the money to absorb losses at Merill Lynch, which it recently acquired.
The Treasury will provide the bank with the capital from a government bailout fund in exchange for shares. Bank of America, the largest U.S. bank, already received 25-billion dollars in assistance from the fund (the Troubled Assets Relief Program).
In return for the funds, Bank of America has to restrict executive pay, limit dividends and modify some loans.
