A cease-fire in the Gaza strip appears to be holding today (Monday), after Israel and Hamas militants separately declared a halt three weeks into a massive Israeli offensive.
Israel is gradually withdrawing from the Palestinian territory. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says Israel’s campaign has achieved all its goals, and he wants his country’s troops out of Gaza as soon as possible. Hamas said it was giving Israeli forces one week to leave.
Also today, Saudi Arabia’s king said during an Arab economic summit in Kuwait that his country will donate one billion dollars for reconstruction in Gaza.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, speaking at the summit, said he is launching a high-level humanitarian team this week to assess the situation in the war-torn Gaza Strip.
