A court in northern Hebei province’s Shijiazhuang cityhas sentenced two people to death and three others to life in prison for their roles in the production and sale of tainted milk that killed six infants. Thursday’s sentences are the first to be handed down in China in connection with the scandal, which sickened almost 300-thousand children last year. The two men sentenced to death by the court were found guilty of producing and adding the industrial chemical melamine to milk.
The court sentenced Tian Wenhua, the former head of Sanlu Group — the dairy company at the heart of the scandal — to life in prison. She is the highest-ranking official to be charged in the case.
Relatives and lawyers have questioned why no government officials have been charged and how the massive scandal that involved 22 companies could bring charges against only 21 people. They also say Tian should have received the death penalty.
