Chinese state media are reporting that an 18-year-old man has died from bird flu, the fifth human death from the virus in China this year. The official Xinhua news agency says the man died in the southern Guangxi region after falling ill on January 19th.

A string of deaths that began earlier this month, as China prepared to mark the Lunar New Year holiday, has sparked concerns about a possible epidemic. The holiday is a time when many Chinese return to their home towns and consume poultry in vast quantities. Chinese health officials say there is no evidence that the potential for an outbreak of bird flu is on the rise.

So far this year, six people have contracted the disease and five have died.
