U.S. President Barack Obama says the United States wants a new partnership with the Muslim world “based on mutual respect and mutual interest.” Speaking on Dubai-based Al-Arabiya television, Mr. Obama said his “job to the Muslim world” is to show that Americans are not their enemy.

In his first formal interview — one made directly to the Muslim world — the American leader said his job also is to communicate to the American people that the Muslim world is filled with extraordinary people who simply want to live their lives and see their children live better lives.

Mr. Obama pointed out that he has lived in Muslim countries and has Muslim family members. As for Islamist terrorists, he said their ideas are bankrupt. He said nothing they have done has ensured that a child in the Muslim world is getting a better education, or has better health care.
