Unidentified gunmen have abducted an American citizen who works for the United Nations refugee agency in southwestern Pakistan.
Police say gunmen ambushed U.N. official John Solecki and his driver today (Monday) in the city of Quetta as they were traveling to work. Solecki is the head of the refugee agency’s office in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province.
Officials say the driver was wounded in the attack and later died.
Pakistan’s foreign ministry condemned what it called a “dastardly terrorist attack,” and said all measures are being taken to ensure Solecki’s safe and speedy recovery.
The United Nations expressed “extreme shock and dismay” while strongly condemning the targeting of humanitarian workers in Pakistan.
Rebels in Baluchistan do not usually target foreigners for kidnappings, although the practice is common elsewhere in Pakistan. No group has claimed responsibility today’s (Monday’s) attack.
