China has asked Russia to investigate the cause of the sinking of a Chinese ship in the waters off Russia’s Pacific Coast earlier this week. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman (Jiang Yu) said Thursday Beijing is demanding that Russian authorities conduct a probe of the recent incident in which eight Chinese sailors went missing and their ship sank.
Russian media say border guard ships followed the Chinese vessel, the New Star, after it crossed Russia’s border without its permission. News reports say the military opened fire on the cargo ship after its captain ignored warning shots.
The ship issued a distress signal on Sunday and 16 crew members, Indonesian and Chinese nationals, got into lifeboats. Reports say half of them were picked up by a Russian vessel, but an attempt to save the others failed.
