China has condemned the auction house Christie’s for auctioning off two ancient bronze Chinese sculptures. China’s State Administration of Cultural Heritage said the auction harmed China’s cultural rights, and violated international agreements that protect world cultural artifacts. The administration also ordered officials to scrutinize Christie’s imports and exports from China. It said the auction of the two relics, which date back to China’s 18th century Qing dynasty, would have a serious impact on Christie’s development in China.

The fountainheads of a rabbit and rat sold for a total of nearly $40 million at a Christie’s auction in Paris Wednesday. They were bought by unidentified bidders relaying their instructions to an official with the auction house.
