European Union leaders have agreed to press for a doubling of the International Monetary Fund’s lending resources for fighting the global economic crisis to $500 billion.
Announcing the decision at the end of a two-day summit in Brussels, EU officials said the leaders agreed to urge next month’s London (G-20) summit of industrialized and emerging nations to approve the increase. They also pledged to provide at least $101 billion in new loans to the fund.
On other issues, the leaders agreed to double the crisis fund to assist struggling Eastern European EU members such as Hungary, Latvia and Romania in dealing with the economic crisis.
The leaders also reviewed a new Eastern Partnership plan for strengthened ties with six former Soviet republics.
