A U.S. State Department official says envoys from Japan, South Korea and the United States will meet in Washington Friday to discuss North Korea’s plans for an imminent rocket launch. The U.S. says North Korea has already mounted a long-range rocket on a launch pad — a move that has stoked tensions.
A South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman (Won Tae-jae) urged North Korea to immediately halt its preparations. And Japan’s Security Council is scheduled to meet Friday to discuss a missile shootdown order.
North Korea says it plans to launch a communications satellite between April fourth and April eighth. But the U.S., Japan and South Korea have said Pyongyang intends to use the launch to test its missile capability. A Taepodong-2 ballistic missile is believed to have the capability of reaching (the northwestern U.S. state of) Alaska.
