U.S. President Barack Obama holds his first formal Cabinet meeting Monday and the topic under discussion will be cutting federal spending. A senior administration official says the president is going to ask heads of government agencies and departments to slash $100 million from the federal budget.
Mr. Obama said in his weekly address Saturday that the current course of government spending is “unsustainable.” He said building a solid economic foundation requires a painstaking examination of the way every dollar is spent.
Mr. Obama’s proposed 2010 budget is $3.5 trillion. The president has said he will announce which government programs will be cut in the coming weeks.
