Afghan officials say a suicide car bomber killed seven civilians Wednesday outside a U.S. military base near the eastern city of Khost. A day earlier in Khost, several militants barricaded themselves inside government buildings and battled Afghan and coalition forces for hours. The city’s governor, Hamidullah Qalanderzai, defended the security forces’ response in an interview with VOA Wednesday. He said no one could have controlled that kind of attack in a short period of time.
South of Khost, in Paktika province, U.S. officials said air strikes accidentally killed two civilians in an attack on militants who fired rockets at a coalition outpost early Wednesday. They said six insurgents also died. Also Wednesday, Afghan officials said U.S. air strikes killed 140 civilians, including many children, in two villages in Farah province last week. A U.S. military spokesman disputed the death toll.
