U.S. Senator John Kerry says China will support United Nations Security Council action on North Korea and agrees it must face the consequences of this week’s nuclear test.
Speaking Thursday with journalists in Beijing, Kerry says he is confident China will be “a constructive player” in international efforts to respond to North Korea’s nuclear test.
Kerry says China’s Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told him in a meeting that China would support a measured response that is being negotiated at the U.N. in New York.
Kerry heads the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee and is in China this week meeting with officials.
China has always favored cautious diplomacy with North Korea. The regime’s collapse could potentially send millions of North Korean refugees streaming over the border.
On Wednesday, U.N. diplomats said key powers on the Security Council were committed to broadening sanctions against North Korea.
Diplomats say the five permanent members of the council (the U.S., Britain, France, China and Russia) plus Japan and South Korea are considering travel and financial sanctions, a broader arms embargo, tougher inspections of cargo, and a freeze on North Korean assets abroad.
