An Air France passenger jet with more than 200 people on board is missing off the coast of Brazil.
A top Air France official, Pierre Henri Gourgeon, said Flight 447 bound for Paris disappeared from radar early Monday — nearly four hours after takeoff from Rio de Janeiro. Speaking in Paris, he ruled out an attack or hijacking, saying the plane showed clear signs of failure. He said an automatic electrical short-circuit message was received from the aircraft shortly after it encountered turbulence from an Atlantic storm.
Gourgeon later told CNN there was no voice contact with the pilots, and said the automated alert suggests the plane with 216 passengers and 12 crew was in “a dire situation” when the message was transmitted.
The Brazilian Air Force says a search and rescue mission was launched off Brazil’s northeast coast.
