Chinese state-run media have cited Chinese military experts as saying that last week’s reported collision between a Chinese submarine and U.S. navy sonar equipment was “likely an accident.” The official China Daily newspaper on Monday quoted experts at Chinese military research institutes, who were commenting on reports of a collision in the South China Sea.
Yin Zhuo, a senior researcher at the People’s Liberation Army’s Navy Equipment Research Center, said it appeared from the reports that the U.S. destroyer did not detect the Chinese sub.
An unnamed U.S. military official told CNN that the submarine damaged an underwater sonar array on Thursday as it was being dragged by the USS John S. McCain in waters near the Philippines. The official reportedly said the collision did not appear to be intentional.
There has been no official confirmation of the incident from either country’s military. U.S. military spokesmen have confirmed only that the navy ship’s sonar equipment was damaged, but not how that damage occurred.
