The United Nations says about 223,000 people have fled Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, since fighting between Islamist militants and the government intensified in May.The U.N. refugee agency reported Tuesday that 20,000 Somali civilians have fled in the last two weeks alone.

Spokesperson Ron Redmond expressed concern about the huge numbers of displaced people seeking refuge at makeshift sites in the Afgooye corridor, southwest of the capital. He said the site lacks adequate shelter, sanitation facilities and clean drinking water. The site already hosts 400,000 refugees from previous conflicts.

Redmond also said this week’s looting of U.N. compounds in Baidoa and Wajid have virtually halted United Nations’ aid efforts in those areas.Somalia’s al-Shabab insurgents raided the compounds on Monday, after saying they would shut down the Somali operations of three U.N. agencies.
