Signs are emerging that struggling Asian economies could soon be on the path to an economic recovery.A report Thursday by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) says East Asian countries will grow by six percent in 2010, twice as much as this year, and that the worst of the recession may be in the past.

The bank says the strongest signs of a financial recovery can be seen in the regions emerging financial markets, which have jumped by almost 70 percent since last November. China’s economy is also growing at a stable pace (eight percent in the three months ending in June), while industrial production is picking up in several other countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam).

Still, senior ADB economist Jong-Wha Lee warns a sustainable economic recovery still depends on the fate of major industrial powers. The ADB says about 60 percent of the region’s exports go to the United States, Europe and Japan.
