Speaking to a crowd of supporters Wednesday at Manila’s historic Club Filipino, Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino said he accepted the call of the people to fight corruption and try to make democracy work for everyone, not just the rich and well connected.Club Filipino was the same place where Senator Aquino’s mother took her oath as president in February 1986 after leading the “people power” revolution that removed then dictatorial President Ferdinand Marcos from office, ending his 20-year reign.
Although Senator Aquino has been a member of parliament for 11 years, he says he had not considered running for president until he saw how much support the public gave his family in the wake of his mother’s death from cancer last month.
