The United Nations Security Council has unanimously approved a resolution to increase efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons. U.S. President Barack Obama presided over a special session of the Security Council Wednesday. The leaders of all 15 Security Council member nations voted for the the U.S.-drafted resolution.
The plan calls for halting the spread of nuclear weapons, promoting disarmament and reducing the risk of “nuclear terrorism. “The resolution sets goals for a “world without nuclear weapons.” It calls on all nations who have not joined the 41-year-old Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to do so, and urges nuclear nations to set conditions on their exports of nuclear materials.
Mr. Obama is the first U.S. president to chair a summit-level meeting at the council.
