The latest trade figures from China show that while the value of the country’s exports in September was lower than a year ago, the rate of decline has slowed, a sign that demand for Chinese goods is improving.

Trade data released by customs authorities Wednesday showed China’s exports fell 15.2 percent to $115.9 billion dollars on year in September. In August the decline had been 23 percent. September’s results were the best since exports fell by 2.8 percent in December of last year, just as the global crisis began to set in.

In a statement on its Web site, the General Administration of Customs said China’s trade surplus in the first nine months of 2009 stood at $135.5 billion, down 26 percent compared with the same period a year ago.Imports declined by 3.5 percent to $103 billion – the slowest pace of decline since imports started to slide in November last year.
