German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on the United States to work with Germany to “overcome the walls of the 21st century,” as she marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.Chancellor Merkel made the remarks in Washington Tuesday as she addressed a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress.Ms. Merkel – who began her second term in office last week – thanked U.S. lawmakers and the American people for their support of the reunification of Germany after the wall came down (on November 9) in 1989.

But the chancellor called on U.S. lawmakers to focus on current walls, including the problem of climate change. She urged lawmakers to support a global climate agreement at the December climate conference in Copenhagen.Frequently interrupted by applause, the chancellor also reiterated Germany’s support for security in Afghanistan and Israel, and said a nuclear bomb in the hands of Iran is not acceptable.
