A problem in the computer system that collects airline flight plans from across the United States caused widespread flight cancellations and hours of delays Thursday. An initial report says both of the Federal Aviation Administration’s computer systems were affected by the five-hour outage.
Controllers entered flight plans manually for all flights that did operate during that period, and the FAA said safety was not affected.No complete report of how many flights were delayed or canceled was immediately available. Bad weather in the northeastern United States also contributed to delays.
