Stock markets in Dubai and elsewhere in the United Arab Emirates plunged for a second day Tuesday, with investors concerned about the state-owned development conglomerate Dubai World’s ability to pay back $59 billion in debt.The Dubai and Abu Dhabi markets both fell more than five percent in early trading.Qatari stocks plunged by more than eight percent, in the first day of trading since the four day Eid-al-Adha holiday.
Dubai’s ruler, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, told Al Arabiya television Tuesday that the world did not understand the government’s plan for restructuring Dubai World.Officials with Dubai World say the group will restructure 26 billion dollars in debt of some of its companies, easing fears that the company would default on its loans.Dubai World said in a statement issued late Monday that it is working on a restructuring plan that includes its subsidiaries Nakheel, and Limitless World, both involved in property development.
