Iranian security forces have fired warning shots and used batons to disperse opposition protesters in Tehran marking the country’s annual Student Day.

Witnesses say protesters gathered on streets and in universities around the capital Monday chanting “death to the dictator,” a reference to Iran’s leadership. Protests also were reported in the Iranian cities of Mashhad, Kerman and Isfahan.

Iranian police and Basij militiamen charged at street protesters in Tehran, prompting the activists to scatter and re-group on nearby street corners. Security forces also surrounded Tehran University to prevent reformists from joining students holding anti-government rallies.

Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi issued a statement on his Web site saying the government is losing its legitimacy by fighting people in the streets and trying to silence students.

Iranian cleric Mehdi Karoubi, another prominent reformist, said in an interview published Monday that repression is not the answer. He told the French newspaper Le Monde that the government must tolerate and accept criticism to achieve reconciliation.
