The UN Climate Change conference has opened in Copenhagen with calls for urgent action and assurances that a deal to combat climate change is within reach.

Danish Prime Minister and conference host Lars Lokke Rasmussen told delegates from 192 nations Monday that the world is looking to them to provide it a better future.

United Nations climate chief Yvo de Boer said the “time has come to deliver,” after two years of talks on replacing an existing U.N. environmental pact. The current treaty, the Kyoto Protocol, expires in 2012.

Delegates this week will seek to craft a blueprint for reducing carbon emissions linked to global warming. They must also agree on a funding mechanism for helping poor countries offset the cost of development while meeting emissions cuts guidelines.

Heads of state from 110 nations are expected to join the conference in its closing days next week.
