Pakistani officials say militants have dynamited two boys schools in the northwestern Khyber region. Officials say no one was injured in the early Wednesday attacks in Bara, a town about 20 kilometers south of Peshawar. Wazir, Khyber’s top administrative official, says the blasts destroyed both main school buildings.

There have been no claims of responsibility but Wazir blames fighters allied with the Taliban and a local militant group called Lashkar-e-Islam (Army of Islam). Al-Qaida and Taliban-linked militants have destroyed hundreds of mostly girls schools across the country.

Meanwhile, the Pakistani army has released an assessment of its two-month old offensive against militants in the South Waziristan tribal region.

In a Wednesday statement, the army says 79 security forces and 589 suspected militants have been killed in the operation. The military also reported recovering hundreds of pistols and rifles, several hundred rockets and missiles and more than 200,000 machine gun rounds.
