U.S. Army General David Petraeus says progress against the insurgency in Afghanistan will be slower than during the surge of American forces in Iraq two years ago.

Speaking on Capitol Hill Wednesday, General Petraeus, the commanding general of the U.S. Central Command, said he fully supports President Barack Obama’s decision to deploy an additional 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan.

General Petraeus said the situation in Afghanistan is likely to get harder before it gets easier, but success is possible. He said the new policy will enable U.S. forces to make important progress over the next 18 months.

The general appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Wednesday alongside the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, Karl Eikenberry.

Eikenberry, who previously questioned aspects of a troop buildup, reiterated his support for the president’s new strategy in his second straight day of questioning by lawmakers.
