U.S.-based Time magazine has selected U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke as its “Person of the Year” for 2009.In a statement Tuesday, Time Managing Editor Richard Stengel said the economic recession was the story of the year, and without Bernanke, the recession would have been a lot worse.Time Correspondent Michael Grunwald wrote that Bernanke did not just reshape U.S monetary policy, he led an effort to save the world economy

The Federal Reserve is the central bank of the United States which oversees and regulates the nation’s monetary policies, banks and financial systems. The 56-year-old Bernanke was appointed Federal Reserve chairman in 2006 by former President George W. Bush.Runners-up for “Person of the Year” include the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, the Chinese worker, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, and Jamaican sprint champion Usain Bolt.
