Danish police used tear gas and clubs Wednesday to beat back hundreds of protesters trying to storm barricades outside the United Nations Climate conference in Copenhagen. Authorities reported more than 200 arrests outside the Bella Center. Inside the facility, activists staged a sit-in to protest against the expulsion of members of an environmental group they say had been accredited but denied entry.
With the conference set to end Friday, negotiators have so far failed to agree on new targets for reducing carbon gas emissions, or for financing the efforts of poor countries to cope with climate change. However, delegates Wednesday were examining a proposal from Ethiopia for $100 billion in funding from wealthy nations by 2020 to offset the impact of global warming in non-industrialized countries. Meanwhile, former Danish Climate Minister Connie Hedegaard resigned Wednesday from the conference presidency.
