North Korea has accepted France’s offer to open a cultural affairs office in Pyongyang as a step toward normalizing diplomatic relations between the countries. The North Korean state news agency reported the government’s decision on Thursday, a month after France sent special envoy Jack Lang to Pyongyang. Lang briefed a group of French lawmakers on the situation Wednesday. He said Paris wants to strengthen ties with North Korea “step by step.”
France is one of only two European Union nations that do not have diplomatic relations with North Korea. Lang traveled to Pyongyang to boost France’s diplomatic profile in the region, saying Paris could also play a role in international efforts to end North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
