Iraqi security officials say Iranian forces have occupied an oil well in southern Iraq in a disputed section of the two countries’ border. Reports from the scene, about 300 kilometers southeast of Baghdad (near the city of Amara) say the Iranian troops raised their country’s flag in a portion of the Fakka oil field – several hundred meters from the border as it is demarcated by Iraq.

One account (by Reuters) quotes an Iraqi official (Deputy Interior Minister Ahmed Ali al-Khafaji) who said 11 Iranian soldiers crossed the border at midafternoon Friday, raised their flag and remained at the oil well. The official added that Iraqi forces have not taken any action, and that his government will pursue “a measured, diplomatic response” to the incident, which recalled memories of clashes between the two countries years ago.
