The European Union has offered Haiti more than $575 million to help the Caribbean nation recover from last week’s earthquake.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton announced the aid package after an emergency meeting in Brussels on Monday. She also said a French-proposed international conference on aid for Haiti will take place in the future, but noted that time or place has yet been set.

Europe’s contribution is the latest in a flood of donations to Haiti, part of the biggest global relief effort since the 2004 Asian tsunami.

Officials in Haiti say the January 12 earthquake killed up to 200,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands more hungry and homeless.

Survivors living in the midst of piles of rubble are growing frustrated with the slow pace of food and water deliveries.
