The U.S. capital is bracing for a second major snow storm just days after a powerful blizzard pummeled the region with snowfalls up to 90 centimeters. The federal government closed for a second day Tuesday as transportation remained difficult throughout much of the Washington area. Many roads are still unplowed and the subway system has limited service.

The situation is likely to get worse as the National Weather Service warns 25 to 50 centimeters of snow could fall on the northeastern United States between Tuesday and Wednesday. The new snow is sure to hamper efforts to dig out Washington and parts of six nearby states from the first storm.

Tens of thousands of homes throughout Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware are still without power, and the roofs of some houses have collapsed due to the weight of the snow.
