U.S. President Barack Obama says funding for the country’s first nuclear reactors in 30 years is just the beginning of efforts to eliminate the nation’s dependence on foreign energy sources. The president Tuesday unveiled an $8 billion government loan guarantee for the construction of two new reactors near the southeastern city of Atlanta, Georgia.

Mr. Obama told workers and officials at a jobs training center just outside Washington that the U.S. must do more to create clean energy to reduce its dependence on oil imports. He warned that other countries, including China, are already investing heavily in nuclear energy and that the U.S. is in danger of falling behind. The loan guarantee is part of a $18.5 billion program authorized by the U.S. Congress in 2005. Mr. Obama has proposed increasing funding for the program to $54 billion in his 2011 budget proposal.
