North Korea says it will not give up its nuclear weapons program in exchange for economic aid, saying the program is designed to counter a nuclear threat from the United States.
In an editorial Friday, the official Korean Central New Agency says North Korea did not seek to develop nuclear weapons for economic benefit or to threaten others, but only out of self-defense.
The editorial says it would be a mistake to think North Korea would give up its nuclear program in exchange for economic aid. It said the key to settling the nuclear issue is to bring an end to what the agency calls the U.S. “hostile policy” towards North Korea.
The United States, China, Russia, Japan and South Korea have been pushing for North Korea to end its nuclear arms programs in exchange for aid.
